Under Alberta’s labour code, if 65% of the carpenters or scaffolders – or even floorcoverers, shopworkers, drywallers or whoever! – in a company want to join the union, we can get what is called automatic certification. That means your company can be unionized simply be showing 7 signed union cards in a company employing 10 workers who we are applying to represent. We would say 6.5 workers, but of course that’s not actually possible. Call it 65 workers out of a hundred for an automatic certification, okay?

If the level of support is between 40% and 65%, a secret ballot vote is scheduled. This usually will be organized right on the jobsite to make the voting process simple.

So if we get 40% of a company’s employees within a union Local’s jurisdiction signing cards, a formal vote on whether or not to unionize must be held. During and after this voting process, the law protects you from negative action by your employer.

The way this process usually begins is that anywhere from just 1 to a small group of employees call us, have a short chat, and then meet with our Organizers.

We’ll be honest – it takes a bit of courage and determination to be part of an ‘organizing drive’ within a company. But the payoff for success is huge. Our pay levels, vacation time, health and welfare benefits and pension plan are industry-best (some employers provide their own benefit and pension plans)…you’ll never be sorry you took that first step and called or emailed us.

The entire process is confidential – your employer will never know you contacted us or signed a union card. 

The Process

  • Usually, an employee contacts a Union Organizer. Sometimes, Organizers approach employees.
  • Union Organizers generate employee support by having employees freely sign a petition, or “card”. These are individual. Your work colleagues won’t know if you signed one, and your employer DEFINITELY won’t know. 
  • In Alberta, at least 40% of the employees need to sign the petition to bring the company to a vote. If 65% of your mates sign, then unionization  is automatic and no vote is required. 
  • Union support is confidential during all of this process.
  • The Union submits an application to the Alberta Labour Relations Board (a government department) to obtain the right to represent employees with their employer.
  • The government conducts an investigation to ensure the cards are authentic – they may call you to ask if you signed a card. Your employer will still not know that you signed a card.
  • If the cards are less than 65% but more than 40%, a secret ballot vote (50% + 1 is required for the Union to become the employees’ representative)
  • The Labour Board certifies the union as the employees’ official representative
  • The Alberta Carpenters negotiate an agreement on your behalf, with your assistance and input, and with your final blessing through a ratification vote.
